BURLINGTON SIGN SYSTEM

Sarah Montgomery designed the logo for the City of Burlington, Vermont as part of the project to design a new sign system for the city. She was part of a three company team who won the contract in 1986. The other members of the team were Ted Montgomery of Groundswell Architects (formerly Indiana Architecture) and David Raphael of Landworks.

The logo was developed in conjunction with the sign design and landscaping plan. The beauty of the view from the city across Lake Champlain to the Adirondack Mountains in New York State proved to be irresistable. The silhouetted skyline of the significant buildings in the Church Street area has changed somewhat since the art was first created, but the beauty of the colors and drama of the sunsets remains eternal.

Subsequently, the Department of Public Works in Burlington asked for a version of the logo for their use. Unanimously it was decided that the logo needed to build on the existing City logo which has proved to be very popular and iconic.

Sarah designed an additional version of the sign in 1998 when the Burlington Waterfront redevelopment plan was completed. The focus changed to show the Community Boathouse on the lakefront which is the heart of the waterfront.
